Gahō studied painting under Shōsen'in Kanō and was influenced as well by the work of Hōga Kanō. He became the chief professor of painting at the Tōkyō Bijutsu Gakkō (now the Tokyo National University of Fine Arts and Music). Later Gahō helped found the Japan Fine Arts Institute (Nihon Bijutsuin) where he championed a new style of Japanese painting now called nihonga. It blended traditional Asian painting with European realism. This gallery shows thirteen of Gahō’s flower and (or) bird paintings. Click on a picture to enlarge it. Gahō also published some of his art in picture books.
